Day Six: Make Your Mission A Book

It’s Lissa here.

When I met literary agent Michele Martin, I had published two books and been offered a book deal for my third, but I was $200,000 in debt after trying to live off $15,000 book advances. My first literary agent had just broken up with me (we agreed to “break up and stay in love”) because I had turned down yet another book advance that wouldn’t pay the bills. So I had no medical career, no money, no agent, no publishing contract, and no real hope of bringing into form the vision I had of helping to uplift consciousness and transform people’s ideas about what it means to be wholly healthy, spiritually awake, and thriving in all aspects of life.

That’s when Michele challenged me with the following challenge, which we encourage you to adopt as your own:

If you were about to die and had only one book left in you, and this book was going to embody the essence of who you are and what you’re here to serve, what is the book idea that would transform the way people think about what matters most to you?

I had been tossing around book ideas, but nobody had ever challenged me with such a pointed question that cut through everything else, straight to the core essence of my vision. That’s how Mind Over Medicine was born. It became a New York Times bestseller, is published in over thirty languages, was turned into a National Public Television special, and became the textbook for the Whole Health Medicine Institute training program for doctors and other health care providers.

What would YOUR book idea be?
